A New Look at the Socio-Historical Background of Arab "Renaissance" (A Sociological Reading in Al-Jabarti's Tarikh) (in Arabic)

Auther : Mohd. Jabir Al-Ansari

It is almost a well-established trend to classify and seperate the periods of modern Arab history by the landmarks of European invasions and world wars, instead of viewing it through its internal continuity as an integral entity. In addition to the external standard of this approach, one of its serious shortcomings is the artificial seperation in Arab historical consiousness between the pre-renaissance and after-renaissance periods divided as such by Napleons invasion of Egypt (1798).

This division has led the Arab mind to underestimate the vital importance of the socio-historical roots and background, of the renaissance age, inherited from the latter Ottoman-Mamluke period which was, in fact, the natural historical soil of this renaissance. Subsequently, all the serious setbacks and abortive obstacles the Arabs are facing now have been interpreted in the light of a wide range of possible hypotheses, except the direct analysis of the natural influence of that period and its deep-rooted factors.Besides, recent comparative studies have revealed the deep influence of each pre-renaissance period on the nature and direction of the new renaissance in the examples of several modern nations, in the west and in the East; Japan being a remarkable example in this respect.
