Locational Implications of Pauses In Written Composition

Auther : Madeline Haggan

Pause locations in written composition were studied in order to investigate sentence level planning. A model relating pauses to simple word search had to be rejected. Instead, the data suggested that pauses in writing showed a tendency to occur at the main syntactic breaks in the sentence than at the lesser syntactic breaks. Inspite of the relative ease of the writing situation as compared with that of spontaneous speech in the sense of constraints to maintain the flow of production, the implications are that both situations conform to a similar model of sentence generation.
