A Reading in Talbiyat of the Jahili Arabs (in Arabic)

Auther : Khalil Abu-Rahma

The study aims at shedding some light on some aspects of the religious ideas of the tribes of Arabia in the pre-Islamic period, it begins with a brief look at the old Arab Scholars concerned with composing some work in the religions of pre-Islamic Arabia. With the exception of Ibn al-kalbis “Kitab al-Asnam”, no other books which were devoted to the religions of Arabia before Islam have come down to us. However, it would appear that pilgrimage was the most important religious duty before Islam. The tribes used to utter their ritual invocation, talbiyat, during their pilgrimage. The different forms of talbiyah are recorded in some sources among which the most important are: Tafsir Muqatil, al-Azminah wa Talbiyat Al-jahiliyyah, al-Muhabbar, Tarikh al-Ya’qubi, and Risalat al-Ghufran.

As a result, some talbiyat (or parts of them) were uttered during the pilgrimage in Islam as indicated by some old sources.

The study clarifies the impact of the polytheistic innovations on the thinking of man, on his attitude towards death and life, and his view about God. Likewise the study refers to the great change provided by the concept of pure monotheism of Islam which uprooted the anxiety caused by the disorganized relation between Allah and man.
