The Al-Mughamis Amirate in Basra at the First Half of the 6th Century (in Arabic)

Auther : Tarik N. Al-Hamadani

Iraqi cities witnessed many important events, such as the emergence of Arab principalities which opposed foreign invasions. The al-Mughamis Amirate was one of these principalities, and that lasted for the first half of the 16th century.

Although we have no information about their origin and growth, it is known that they gained their independence at the beginning of the 16th century, and had to face foreign perils, either from the Portuguese or the Ottomans.

The Portuguese, as well as the Ottomans, disliked to see any local power in the area, and used all methods to dislodge it. In the case of the al-Mughamis, the Portuguese declared war on them as soon as they felt that they were preparing for a new fleet at Basra.
