The Rapid Urban Growth In Greater Khartoum (in Arabic)

Auther : Osman El-Hassan M. Nour

The present study uses the findings of the recent censuses and sample surveys, carried out by the Dept. of Statistics, King Saud University during 1955,1983, to investigate the phenomena of urban growth in Greater Khartoum, and examine the components and the factors influencing this recent accelerating phenomena.

In spite of the low proportion of urban population in the Sudan, compared to many Arab countries, the recent censuses have shown a rapid rate of urban growth which may double the urban population of the Sudan in less than ten years, Greater Khartoum is one of the largest urbank centers in the Sudan; it constitutes about 30 per cent of the total urban population in the Sudan. This study has revealed that before 1983 both natural increase and internal migration have played a significant and equal role in the rapid rate of urban growth in “Greater Khartoum”. However, the 1983 census has indicted that internal migration is showing a greater contribution to the rapid rate of urban growth in Greater Khartoum.
