Two Early Mamluk 'Marriage Contracts' (in Arabic)

Auther : Ahmad Abdul Raziq

The present study deals with two marriage contracts from the early Egyptian Mamluk period, i.e. the second half of the 7th century h/13th century AD’ they bear the names of al-faqih Nagm al-Din Ishaq and the daughter of Nasair Ibn Abd al-Mun’im. These two contracts are of the oldest Mamluk Marriage contracts preserved in the Museum of Islamic Art in Cairo. Their importance could be enchanced when we shed some light on the different ways in formulating marriage contracts dealing with the middle class.

They contribute, too to gaining some information about the social life as to the dowry (sadaq) presented to the bride and the different arrangements made for the remaining annual payments. This leads, of course, to the identification of the mamluk coinage used during this period.

One the other hand, these documents give some details on repudiation. This leads us to deal with the deputy judge in one of the Mamluk Egyptian provinces. His torical sources had neglected to point out to the role of judges in general and the role of Safiite judges in particular. These documents deal with the notion of succession of religious functions in some families.

Finally, these contracts give us the opportunity to study the cloth material on which they were written.
