Human Settlements Development in the Arab States of the Gulf (in Arabic)

Auther : Omar El-Khatib

The subject of human settlements is now considered one of the most important and urgent issues for all the developing countries including, of course, the Arab states of the Gulf.

The international development Strategy which has been adopted by the Unived nations since the early seventies, has given special attention to the development of the quality of human life and natural environment by various means. One of the means is the formulation and implementation of suitable development and planning policies in order to reach a better equilibrium among the different regions or districts of the country. In other words, the so-called equilibrium between rural and urban development has become a more urgent necessity for developing countries than ever before.

This study analyses briefly the development style in the Arab States of the Gulf since the very high and sudden increase of the oil prices, in order to understand the problems concerning the human settlements, and the interaction and correlation between those problems and the whole national development process in the states under study. We proceed then to propose some ideas which, once put under execution might be helpful in the solving of those problems, of which the “desertification” and the internal emigration (from the rural to the urban zones and regions) are considered the most dangerous in the long run.
