Functionalism and the Comparative Study of Political Systems (in Arabic)

Auther : Kamal El-Menoufi

The social scientists have always recognized the need for a system of generalized knowledge for an explanation of the different aspects of social reality. One such system is known as “functionalism.

Functionalists in politics argue that it is better to approach systems of government in third-world countries from a functional point of view. They have tried to examine, interpret and analyze politics in these countries with the help of the functional framework.

To show the validity of this argumentation the paper starts with describing the main tenets of functional analysis as expounded by its main theorists, especially the sociologists Talcott Parsons and Robert Merton. After examining the general premises of functionalism, attention would be focused on the functional approach to political systems. The contribution by Gabriel Almond has been given a special attention simply for his being the most famous functional theorist in the field of comparative politics. Also, contributions by Joseph la Palombara and Jean Blondel are presented to show how similar these functional political scientists are, Finally we have tried to pinpoint advantages and disadvantages of functionalism as expounded by its advocates and opponents. An attempt is made to find out the soundness of the functional explanation of the political reality as it does exist in third-world countries.
