The Separating Pronoun (in Arabic)

The article attempts to clarify the meaning of the separating pronoun. The different opinions of grammarians concerning the identity of this pronoun and whether it belongs to the category of noun or particle and its place in parsing are surveyed.
The conditions of the use of this pronoun in the sentence and its effect on meaning and the changes required in the form of other parts of the sentence are discussed. The different opinions of grammarians in respect to validity are compared.
The importance of the separating pronoun, its place in the structure of the sentence, and the consequences of its use on the structure of the Arabic sentences are discussed.
Modern usage of the separating pronoun is compared with its usage in classical texts. Various aspects of the topic are dealt with in the light of examples from the Holy Qur’an and Jurjani’s theory of sentence structure.
The article is concluded by indicating that the correct usage of the separating pronoun needs a thorough knowledge of the structure of the sentence, and that it has a great importance on both from and meaning.
