Economic And Social Relations Between The Arab Wilayat During The 1st Ottoman Period (1517 - 1798) (in Arabic)

Auther : Abdul Raheem Abdul Rahman

While studying these relations, we shall try to clarify the following points:

  1. That they did not exclusively belong to the Ottoman period but did exist between the Mashriq and the Maghrib since the first Islamic Age. With the rise of the 16th Century, these Wilayat being under the Ottoman rule, the unity of the Arab World became effective and really strong. The threatening of the Spanish danger led the Maghrib to get closer to the Mashriq and ask for the Ottomans help.
  2. The ottomans did not impose any restrictions upon the migrations of the in habitants from one country to another. On the contrary, complete freedom was given everywhere to economic activities and this contributed to the increase in the commercial and trade movements among the Arabs.
  3. The Centers of Culture, like Al-Azhar and Zeituna attracted scholars and students from all over the Arab Wold, who tried to settle and live therein and pursue their economic and social activities.
  4. The hostile relations between Europe and the Maghrib contributed to increase the number of the Maghribis in the Mashriq. The danger of piracy led to a greater commercial activity from the Mashriq to the Maghrib and vice-versa.

Therefore in the cities of the Mashriq, especially Eghpt, the Maghribis had a large colony which exercised a certain influence on the social and economic life there.

We also find documents concerning the assimilation of Arab settlers who used to live in the Egyptian cities and provinces, having their special activities and being influenced by the Eghptian manners and customs. They in return, had an influence on the Egyptians with Arab Wilayat were strengthened and that is what we have tried to show on the basis, as already pointed out, of the documents kept at the Mahkama Shar’iya.
