The Morphological Structure Of Nouns And Verbs In Arabic: A Historical Descriptive Study (in Arabic)

Auther : Abdul-Rahman Ayoub

This paper deals with the inflectional final morphemes that are attached to nouns, and the morphemes that indicate duality, plurality and nunnation (tanwin). It also discusses nominative and accusative pronouns since duality and plurality morphemes apear in them. The paper traces the history and developments of such morphemes in the light of Semitic comparative studies.

The paper deals next with the verb, the affixes (prefixes, suffixes and infixes) in it, and the denotations of these affixes. It also discusses the moods and inflectional forms of present verbs, the verb aspects of action time, manner and direction. Then the paper discusses the case of inflection and non-inflection.

The paper concludes that the inflectional case and the inflectional relation are qualities characteristic of nouns. As for the variations that take place in the ending of the present verb, they should not be considered inflections because they are due to particles that produce a change in the manner of the verb action or in the verb time, etc.

Finally the paper touches upon inflection on the basis of function (I’rab ala al-mahall) and understood inflection (I’rd muqaddar). The former is accepted whereas the latter is considered unjustifiable.
