On One Of The Cantos Of Notes Of A Gulf Sailor (in Arabic)

Auther : Souleiman El-Shatti

This is an analytical literary study of the “Fifth Canto” of notes of a Gulf Sailor, a volume of verse published in 1964 and written by the Kuwaiti poet Mohammed El-Fayez along the lines of unrhymed modern free verse.

This study attempts to penetrate into the heart of the poem in order to get to the minute hidden details and to find a connection between the surface salient features, meanings and images, and the other current hidden beneath. Finding these interrelations might transfer us to the truth of the experiment intended by the poet and hidden under many layers of suggestive phenomena.

This study begins with observing the externals which would lead to the internals. When the poem begins with the dancing tunes of the sailor selling perfumes and incense, it offers a pleasant image which lures customers on to buying. On the surface, the sailor seems happily singing and smiling. But there is a another thread underneath, clamouring in its turn with a tune hides beneath it a tune of secret pain and agony.

This study concentrates on pointing out this polarity of joy and sorrow. It does so by following the lead of the images, phrases and music which reveal the developments in the relations between the two contrasting principles of joy and pain in their apparent sepaation and hidden unity. This is made possible through the use of suggestive artistic tools. When the poet, for example wonders.

Why does the earth bring out flowers

While the bones of the dead it covers?

Where is the beloved?

He is suggesting the existence of a relation between the bright flowers above the earth and the bones of the dead and gloomy death hidden underneath.

In a similar manner, this paper follows up the various stanzas of the fifth canto to point out the developments of this antitheses until it finally reaches perfect synthesis and complete unity.
