Ancient Arabic Poetry And World Literatures (in Arabic)

Auther : M. C. Lyons

This paper deals with the phenomenon of poetry and studies its artistic, social and humanistic aspects and its functions as a mean of communication among individuals and among human groups with different languages, poetry might lose some of its beauty when translated. Scholars and researchers might face some difficulties when they try to understand ancient literatures, especially ancient Arabic poetry.

In the light of the anthropological theory which related poetry to environment, this paper relates creativity in poetry to the environment which secretes and produces it. The European misunderstanding of ancient Arabic poetry may thus be attributed to their ignorance of the nature of the beduin environment which produced ancient Arabic (especially pre-Islamic) poetry.

The paper then deals with “versification and poetry-making and considers it a feature common to all world literatures. It gives a detailed discussion of the theory of the demons (or the Muses) of poetry, and of the reason for the wide circulation of this theory among the ancients and their faith in it. This is followed by a discussion on the ancient Arab Muses, the anthropological interpretation of such myths, and on poetry as a natural gift and talent and as an art.
