The Bahraini Short Story Between The Freedom Of Art And The Slavery Of Commitment (in Arabic)

Auther : Mohamed Hassan Abdullah

This paper uses the analytical method and studies the works of a number of short story writers in Bahrain. They are all young politics is a dominant theme in their stories. Artistically, they can be classified into various groups, since they do not not express their political worries and aspirations in the same way. Protests against in justice, dominance of violence, and the futility of refusal are common to them all. Amin Saleh (author of here is the rose, here we dance and of the Butterflies) and Mohamad Al-Majid (author of Travel to the cities of joy), for instance, resort to concentrated symbolism, poetical restlessess, and far-fetched metaphors, In contradiction to them, Mohammed Abdul-Malik moves between critical realism and realistic socialism in his two short story anthologies: The Death of the cart owner which frequently echoes Maxim Gorky, and We love the sun which resembles the world of Majid mahfouz. But Mohammed Abdulmalik comes closest to the rules and principles of story writing. Khalaf Ahmad Khalaf, who wrote the Dreem of Other Faces, comes next in observing these rules, and he concerns himself with the psychological world of his characters and with the significance of events. Abdullah Ali Kalifah, author of The Winter’s Tune, are more than the others for local colour, especially the local features related to the direct surroundings and those related to folk stories.

Concern with politics in not the only difference that distinguishes these young writers from those who came before them, such as Ali Sayyar, author of As-Sayed, and Fu’ad Obeid author of The End of A Story and of Memories on the Sand. The other difference is that they have attempted to com closer to the rules and principles of short-story written, especially in their attention to analysis and to the time dimension. The attempts to observe development and to reveal its various aspects, and to study the differences and conflicts between the generation of seamen and that of employees, are found to be the concern of both groups of writers, in different degrees of course.

The analytical method used in this study has always taken into consideration the fact that the Bahraini story is still taking the first steps, and that it would therefore be unkind to treat it exactingly or to compare it to advanced stories. This method has also taken into consideration the fact that the artistic structure is twisted to serve political purposes, and that sometimes the artistic instinct wins the day and produces a well-knit work which can impart a great deal without overstatement and without arbitrariness.
