Dealing with Meaning in Traditional Arabic Thought (in Arabic)

Auther : Khaled A. Al-Jabr

The meaning of a text is always hidden behind the form. This is the reason why discussion of meaning has always been characterized by a certain degree of vagueness. Scholars have therefore differed with regard to how meaning is best defined and explained.

The present study attempts to draw a compromise between the opinions of traditional Arab thinkers and how they dealt with meaning: it mentions different opinions and disputes. The paper discusses the concept of text, the relation between text, meaning and context, the concept of meaning and its subdivisions.

The study attempts to link between meaning and the intention of the producer of a text, on the one hand, and the interpretation of the receiver of the text, on the other. The study concludes by dealing with the aesthetics of meaning and its pleasure for the interpreter of the text.
