Toward an Operational Concept of Family Business in the Egyptian Business Context
Auther : Amr A. Zedan
This exploratory study attempts to reach a practical understanding of the family business in the Egyptian context. The paper begins with a review of the various definitions of family business developed and adopted in the literature to date. The criteria and approaches used in developing family business definitions have been discussed. The researcher used the "Components-of-Involvement" approach to operationally define the Egyptian family business, concentrating on two dimensions: "the ownership and the management patterns" in the Egyptian business families and the family intention to maintain family control. A sample of 137 companies was selected from the Egyptian family business sector. A questionnaire was used in data collection pertaining to the variables of the study. A discussion of the results and their implications were presented along with suggestions for further research.
