As an important element in any supply chain network, ports are the backbone of logistics and transportation in today's global economy. The quality and promptness of services that ports offer are among the many factors that companies look for when choosing a port to fulfill their logistical needs. Any delay in releasing exports/imports from a port could mean financial loss for both the supplier and the customer. Therefore, improving the operational workflow is considered to be a critical success factor for any port to achieve competitive advantage over other ports in the region. Accordingly, this study will investigate the factors and reasons that affect the operational process and workflow of Kuwaiti ports, focusing specifically on Shuwaikh Port. A simulation model is designed here to identify bottlenecks and for effective workflow planning. Based on the simulation model results, recommendations can be offered to overcome the obstacles. This study is very important as it would enable the identification of weaknesses that cause customers to prefer working with other ports in the region. We hope to identify some opportunities that will enable the improvement and preservation of Kuwaiti ports.
