Financial Reforms and Interest Rate Spread in the Jordanian Banking System (1981 – 2002)

Auther : Ghassan Omet
& Khaled Al-Zu’bi

Given the economic importance of interest rate liberalization and the size of the Jordanian banking sector, it is useful to examine the impact of the financial reform (interest rate liberalization) in 1989/90 on the interest rate spread among Jordanian banks. Based on the statistical analyses, the results indicate that the 1989/90 interest rate liberalization did not have any significant impact on the interest margin among Jordanian banks. Moreover, the results indicate that the main determinants of the interest margin are total loans to total assets and loan loss provisions to total loans. In more specific terms, Jordanian banks do not shift the risks associated with loans (and their provisions) to their customers in the form of wider interest rate margins.
