A Minimal Spanning Tree Model for Water Allocation

Auther : Wadad A. Saad
Rawda M. Chebbo

The allocation and distribution of water to Southern Lebanese towns, which have long suffered from lacking in water distribution and scarcity, is among key reconstruction and rehabilitation projects that consume a part of the public budget of the region. Many factors influence the planning of water distribution to towns: the capacities, the needs and the cost of equipment of installation. The authorities in the region aim to provide water to 29 southern towns (via a principle water allocation network). It is required to determine the links that will result in the use of minimum water pipes while guaranteeing that all the areas will be connected (directly or indirectly) to the main water station. We used a minimal spanning tree technique to address this question. The importance of this approach lies its ability to provide on optimal solution that allows the execution of this project at minimum costs. This study results in costs that are much lower than the costs of an existing study that doesn’t take into account the scientific method to find the best solution.
