The UAE Youth’s Career Exploration: A Path Model to Examine Factors Influencing their Career Insight

Auther : Khalid M. Alkhazraji
Mohamed Yahia El-Bassiouni

This paper is concerned with career exploration college students in the UAE . The research instrument was constructed using several career scales measuring different factors such as career insight, availability of career information, perception of employment opportunities, and parental encouragement along with same demographic variables indicating students seniority, gender and parents education level. A random cluster sample was used to collect the data and a measurement model was fit to assess the validity and reliability of the selected indicators. No significant differences in the four factors under consideration were detected by students seniority, gender and levels of parents education, except that available to females than to males. A path model was used to establish that information availability, employment opportunities and parental encouragement have positive influence on career insight. However, while perception of employment opportunities had significant direct effects, parental encouragement had both direct (79%) and indirect (21%) significant effects on career insight. In contrast, the significant effects of information availability on career insight were totally indirect. The postulated model was also found to explain about 60% of the variation in career insight for those students whose parents have higher levels of education.
