Internet Banking Usage by Bank Consumers in the UAE: An Exploratory Study

Auther : Mohammed I. El- Adly

This study is concerned with Internet banking usage from the bank consumers’ perspective in the UAE. It aims at knowing which bank transactions are the most frequently distributed through Internet banking (IB), determining users attitudes towards IB, identifying reasons of not using IB, and also the demographic characteristics of users and non users of IB. a questionnaire has been designed to collect data from a systematic traffic random sample of bank customers in three cities in the UAE (i.e. Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Al-Ain). The number of usable questionnaires in data analysis is 409. The study has revealed that view-only functions are the most frequent functions that are distributed through IB followed by account control functions and then functions of applying for new services. It also concluded that IB users have positive attitudes toward it. The most important reasons of not using IB were security concerns, possibility of errors while dealing through Internet, not knowing how to use IB, and reluctance to change the current ways of dealing with banks respectively. Finally, this study ends up with a number of academic and practical recommendations.
