Professional Autonomy of Physicians in Riyadh Hospitals: Applied Study

The objective of this study is to identify level of professional autonomy among physicians on public and private hospitals in Riyadh Saudi Arabia. Professional autonomy was defined as the freedom to make clinical care decisions without external pressure or intervention, it was measured for purposes of this study through five indicators: freedom to us hospital re-courses, control of work schedule, ability to influence major decisions, absence of external intervention, and pressure of financial consideration. Results show that physicians enjoy a moderate to high degree of professional autonomy, and that there are significant differences according to hospital type, gender, nationality and position.
