The Relation between Depression and Addiction to Online Games in Kuwait

Auther : Hasan A Abbas

Aim of the Paper: This paper investigates Belongingness Theory’s effectiveness in explaining addiction to play online gaming and, indirectly, depression.
Study Design: A special instrument is employed for the purposes of this study. Data are analyzed using different statistical tools such as Confirmatory Factor Analysis, Univariate analysis, and Structural Equation Modeling.
Sample and Data: The conceptual framework empirically tests 526 players of online games in Kuwait.
Results: The results show that all study hypotheses are significant. A sense of belonging significantly impacts addiction. In addition, the results show that two types of depression are affected by addiction.
Conclusion: Belonging directly affects addiction and, indirectly, two types of depression. Also, users should be aware of the negative effects of overusing online games and the need for socialization. If online game habits begin to interfere with work, social life, study, or personal emotions, users should note that they are in a negative state and, therefore, should reduce their online presence.
